Where infants look when impossible things happen: simulating and testing a gaze-direction model

چکیده
Schlesinger (2003, Adaptive Behavior, 11: 97–107) recently proposed a model of eye movements as a tool for investigating infants’ visual expectations. In the present study, this gazedirection model was evaluated by: (a) generating a set of predictions concerning how infants distribute their attention during possible and impossible events; and (b) testing these predictions in a replication of Baillargeon’s ‘car study’ (Baillargeon, 1986, Cognition, 23: 21–41, Baillargeon and DeVos, Child Development, 62: 1227–1246). We found that the model successfully predicts general features of infants’ gaze direction, but not specific differences obtained during the possible and impossible events. The implications of these results for infant cognition research and theory are

Watch the hands: infants can learn to follow gaze by seeing adults manipulate objects.
Infants gradually learn to share attention, but it is unknown how they acquire skills such as gaze-following. Deák and Triesch (2006) suggest that gaze-following could be acquired if infants learn that adults' gaze direction is likely to be aligned with interesting sights. This hypothesis stipulates that adults tend to look at things that infants find interesting, and that infants could learn b...

متن کاملDirect gaze modulates face recognition in young infants.
From birth, infants prefer to look at faces that engage them in direct eye contact. In adults, direct gaze is known to modulate the processing of faces, including the recognition of individuals. In the present study, we investigate whether direction of gaze has any effect on face recognition in four-month-old infants. Four-month infants were shown faces with both direct and averted gaze, and su...
متن کاملGaze following: why (not) learn it?
We propose a computational model of the emergence of gaze following skills in infant-caregiver interactions. The model is based on the idea that infants learn that monitoring their caregiver's direction of gaze allows them to predict the locations of interesting objects or events in their environment (Moore & Corkum, 1994). Elaborating on this theory, we demonstrate that a specific Basic Set of...
متن کاملThe eyes have it ! Reflexive orienting is triggered by nonpredictive gaze
A moment's introspection reveals that in everyday life, gaze shifts can provide a rich and complex source of social information. For instance, at a loud party one can communicate the desire to leave by simply " catching " a friend's eye and then looking toward the door. The use of gaze shift as a social cue would, of course, have had many evolutionary advantages as well. For example, a sudden s...
